Author Photo Requirements

Use these source requirements to choose a clear, production-ready portrait for your Book II application.

The application form checks that an image is at least 1500 × 2100 pixels in either orientation—the pixel dimensions produced by a 5 × 7 inch image at 300 dpi. Framing, lighting, background, sharpness and colour still require your confirmation and editorial review.

Requirements from the supplied document

Below you will find some photo requirements to help you choose the best photo for your book.

  • Images must be 300 dpi. Internet images are low resolution (72 dpi), and are not acceptable. If you view your image at 100% and it is blurry, it is too small.
  • 5 × 7 inches or larger.
  • No cropping above the waist. Head, shoulders and arms must be completely showing.
  • Photos on solid light backgrounds are preferred. Authors will be extracted from the photograph and placed on the book cover. All background imagery will be deleted. Do not take photos while leaning on objects, such as a fence or light post.
  • If taking photos with a digital camera, set the image quality to maximum resolution (maximum megapixels).
  • Please avoid taking photos under fluorescent lighting.
  • No black-and-white images are acceptable.

What produces the best result

The supplied positive example describes images that are high resolution (300 dpi), show all portions of the upper body, use a solid light background, and will produce the best results.

The supplied negative example says: “Do not crop. Do not provide low resolution images or images with colour or busy backgrounds.” Read “colour” here as referring to the background; the same source explicitly requires the author photograph itself to be in colour.

Checklist before uploading

  1. Choose a colour portrait rather than a black-and-white image.
  2. Confirm it is at least 1500 × 2100 pixels in portrait or landscape orientation.
  3. View it at 100% and check that the face and clothing look sharp rather than blurry.
  4. Make sure the head, shoulders and arms are visible, with framing down to the waist.
  5. Prefer a solid, light background with no objects that you are leaning against.
  6. Avoid fluorescent lighting and use the camera’s maximum image quality.

Uploading through this website

The source document suggested using a file-delivery service if a photograph was too large to email. This Book II application replaces that email route with a private upload. The website accepts JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 15 MB and checks the pixel dimensions before submission.

Passing the automatic check confirms only file dimensions. The editorial team may still ask for a replacement if the image is black and white, blurry, tightly cropped, poorly lit, or difficult to separate from its background.
